Pete's Hobbies

Photography

Photography is the art and science of capturing light to create images that tell stories or evoke emotions. As a hobby, it’s incredibly rewarding because it combines creativity with technical skill, allowing you to document life, explore nature, or express artistic ideas. Whether you’re using a smartphone or a DSLR, photography gives you the chance to slow down, notice details, and share your perspective with others. It’s accessible, flexible, and can be as simple or as advanced as you want—perfect for anyone looking to blend creativity with technology.

A Short History of Photography

Photography began with the camera obscura, a device that projected images onto surfaces, laying the groundwork for modern cameras. In 1826, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce captured the first permanent photograph, “View from the Window at Le Gras,” using a bitumen-coated plate and hours of exposure. Soon after, Louis Daguerre introduced the daguerreotype in 1839, making photography more practical. The late 19th century saw innovations like George Eastman’s Kodak camera, which brought photography to the masses. Color photography became popular in the 1930s with Kodak’s Kodachrome film, and digital photography revolutionized the craft in the late 20th century. Today, photography is everywhere—from smartphones to professional gear—yet its essence remains the same: capturing light to preserve moments.
